Tourism Promotion Programs in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) in coordination with Nepal Association of Tour and Travel Agents (NATTA) organized ‘Nepal Night’ program at Renaissance Kuala Lumpur Hotel in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 3 September 2015. The program was aimed to disseminate information on the present situation of Nepalese tourism after devastating earthquake on 25th April, 2015. Nepal team was led by Mr. Tika Ram Adhikari, Director General of Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation and Executive Committee Member of NTB.

Tour operators from Nepal and local tour operators from Malaysia interacted on B2B dealings for selling tour packages that Nepal offers. They focused on building up strong business ties and further exploring business opportunities between travel trades of both the countries.

Addressing the gathering of the night, His Excellency, Ambassador of Nepal to Malaysia Dr. Niranjan Man Singh Basnyat, introducing Nepal as the birthplace of Lord Buddha and the land of the highest peak on earth, portrayed Nepal as a nature, culture and adventure based tourism destination. He recalled the devastating earthquake in Nepal and its widespread media coverage that presented Nepal as an unsafe destination among the travel trade sector and consumers. Ensuring that Nepal is safe to visit; HE Ambassador requested the local tour operators and media fraternity to promote Nepal by sending tourists from Malaysia during the upcoming tourist season.

Welcoming the audience, Director General of Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation and the Executive Committee Member of NTB, Mr. Tika Ram Adhikari highlighted the cultural and biological richness of Nepal. He expressed the willingness of Nepal to provide hospitality of its kind to visitors and tried to ensure the local travel trade that Nepal is safe to visit. Describing the physical damage and human casualty caused by the earthquake, he reiterated, “In the context of present scenario, the nation has given the first priority in rebuilding and restoration of the lost heritages and properties. With vigorous support of various Governmental and Non-Governmental organizations, local communities and private sectors, maintenance and reconstruction of historical places, monuments, trekking trails, hotels, lodges and tea shops have been initiated to return back to normal situation.” He disclosed that with all these efforts, Government of Nepal has adopted a slogan “Nepal: Back, on top of the World”.” He requested to support Nepal by sending more tourists to Nepal for revival of Nepalese tourism.

A presentation of Nepal’s present tourism scenario was made by Mr. Khadga Bikram Shah, Senior Officer of NTB. Presenting the effects of an earthquake in tourism sector of Nepal, he made it clear that major trekking trails and national parks are unaffected and safe to visit; heritage sites are reopen for tourists; airports, highways, communication facilities and hospitals are in operation; and 90 percent of hotels and teashops are providing their services to tourists. He showed the concern that Nepal is eagerly waiting to welcome tourists from Malaysia.

The program was coordinated by Mrs Jiswan Tuladhar, Jt. Treasurer of NATTA. Similarly, in coordination with NATTA, NTB along with Nepal Airlines and 13 travel trade companies from Nepal participated in the Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA) Fair held at Putra World Trade Center (PWTC), Kuala Lumpur from 4 to 6 September 2015. On the 3 day fair, the participating companies from Nepal tried to attract buyers and visitors by offering attractive tour packages of Nepal. The local tour operators and general visitors raised queries about the effect and consequences of the earthquake on 25th April in Nepal. NTB and participating companies tried to convince the visitors by clarifying that the situation in Nepal had bounced back to normal and Nepal is ready to welcome tourists as usual. The visitors also showed their concern on airfare and reliability of flights operated Nepal Airlines in Kuala Lumpur-Kathmandu sector. The fair was visited by around 100,000 visitors.
