ncThe top two ruling parties – Nepali Congress and CPN (UML) -today urged the public and the party cadres to light lamps at their residences, party offices and public places to mark the promulgation of the new constitution on September 20.

The parties said that the Nepali people have been aspiring and launching the struggle with a number of agitations and uprisings since 1949 (2007 BS) for drafting a constitution through people’s representatives which has materialized in the Federal Democratic Republican Nepal’s constitution. The parties have called on the party cadres to hold a victory celebration on the occasion.

The parties have further said the day is important in terms of the spirit of national unity and elation, and appealed for lighting lamps to convey a message of the victory of the Nepali people.

In a statement issued on behalf the Nepali Congress, party Chief Secretary Hrishikesh Tiwari said, “The success in constitution making – which is taking place for vesting full sovereignty and state power in the Nepali people by giving high regard to the sentiments of all the Nepali people and to evoke the sense that the source of the state power rests in the Nepali people -is the foundation of lasting peace, democracy and prosperity.”

NC has further stated that the constitution relayed an opportunity to provide an escape vault to prevailing political, economic, social and cultural conflict in the country. “Nepali Congress heartily welcomes the fact that it is now certain the Nepali people will get a new constitution,” it is stated.

Similarly, in a statement issued by UML General Secretary Ishwor Pokharel, the party has appealed to all its sister organizations in the country and abroad to organize victory rally, and creative programmes in line with local specialty and in coordination with the party and the civil society on September 21, a day after the promulgation of the new constitution.

“It is certain that the country will receive a new constitution by September 20,” UML said, “The day when the constitution will be delivered will not just be a simple day rather it will also be a day of an extremely lasting importance when the country will embark on a new path of prosperity by settling all the incomplete work loads of modern political history of Nepal.”

The party further said the constitution would establish the supremacy and sovereignty while creating a new base for Nepal’s national unity and democratic identity.
